In the summer of 2012 VJB Vineyards and Cellars celebrated its grand opening. With a portfolio of more than 15 wines including several Italian varietals rarely produced in California, coupled with wood oven pizzas and the wonderful, home style Italian food Maria is so well known for, VJB quickly became a must visit destination in the Sonoma Valley.

As the family and VJB Vineyards and Cellars reflects on their first decade in the winery business and time settling into their new home, it’s the combination of being firmly rooted in tradition coupled with an ability to dream beyond the present day that’s led them from running a popular restaurant to owning a small tasting room to their current property that blends the best of both worlds into a place where guests can enjoy wine, food and true Italian hospitality embraced in the company of family and friends.

The bell tower houses a 1,000-pound bronze bell cast by the Marinelli Foundry in Italy. It chimes every hour and can be heard throughout the valley.
Our commitment to showcase the best of Sonoma extends to our Tasting Room, which pairs our award-winning wines with the most breathtaking view in Sonoma Valley, and to our ZAGAT-recommended Wine & Food Pairing, which has earned worldwide praise from legions of fans and was voted “#1 in America” in 2013 and 2015 by Open Table diners. In 2012, we planted a 2-acre Estate Garden, giving our chef access to fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs grown steps away from our kitchen, and giving our guests an unforgettable, farm-to-table Wine & Food Pairing experience in the heart of Sonoma Valley.

The winery–founded in 2007 on a property that pioneered pre-prohibition Sonoma Valley winemaking–is managed by fourth-generation California farmers and brothers, Andrew and Adam Mariani.

Andrew and Adam believe that the best wines are a result of a healthy relationship between man and nature, and that a vineyard managed in harmony with the greater ecosystem results in more site-specific wines that represent a sense of time and place. When vinified with non-interventionist methods, the result is a distinct wine that faithfully reflects what the vineyard naturally expresses.

Schug Carneros Estate Winery celebrates the 40th anniversary of its first vintage, made when a passion for Pinot Noir led patriarch Walter Schug to establish his own label and eventually leave Joseph Phelps, where he was the founding winemaker crafting wines that put Napa Valley on the map. Now the family-owned winery is entering a new chapter, with dynamic young German-American winemaker Johannes Scheid bringing modern touches to the estate’s European-styled wines. Schug’s 100-year-old heritage — stemming from a Pinot Noir estate in Germany’s Rheingau region originally planted in the 12th century — spanned an era of pioneering winemaking in Napa Valley before putting down roots in the cool-climate, wind-swept Carneros hills in Sonoma. Today, Walter’s children are preserving their family’s rich winemaking legacy for generations to come. They invite you to rediscover the authentic roots of Schug — by sharing a bottle of their family’s wines with your own loved ones.

The two married and settled in Sonoma where, between harvests, Ellie campaigns for endangered wildlife while Chris continues to build a digital platform that has changed the way wineries do business.

Since then, Dunstan has grown in stature but still remains small in production. Today, with the addition of Star Mooring Farm in the Willamette Valley, the Dunstan project is an expression of two distinct vineyards.

In 2019 we completed our Estate Winery, finally bringing production onto our own property. The winery uses a unique perforated metal skin to combine the benefits of open-air fermentation with the protection of an enclosed space. Solar panels, waste-water recycling, and the ability to fill barrels by gravity bring the building in line with our goal of having minimal environmental impact. By bringing production into our own facility we are able to focus even more closely on each individual fermentation. In the winery our philosophy mirrors that in the vineyard: reduce the human impact and allow nature to take its course, with subtle guidance along the way to ensure the wines reach their full potential.

Our winegrowing team perfectly match our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines with our diverse estate vineyard sites, rendering infinite possibilities in our finished wines. Pinot Noir is planted in the rocky, volcanic soils on the estate’s highest ridges. Chardonnay is planted in the clay-rich soils on the lower sections of the estate.
